Princess Penobscat Maine Coon Cat

She came to us in October of 2002. She was a stray, probably abandoned on our farm, and had been living in the fields and bunking in the woodshed over the summer. By late October, I had mowed the fields and all sensible rodents had retired for the winter. Consequently, Miss Penny was getting hungry and started eating suet crumbs that Martha dropped as she put suet cakes in the bird feeders. Martha went inside and got her some leftover oatmeal. I built an insulated cat house and within a few days, as I came downstairs to make morning coffee, her pink nose was pressed against the glass of the French doors as the snow swirled around her. I was hooked, let her in, and she followed me upstairs to our bedroom with the morning coffee for Martha.

The vet said she was seven months to a year old, born around the beginning of 2002. She also had been exposed to feline leukemia, as most strays are.

Because of her coloration, we called her Penobscat Maine Coon Cat or Penny for short. She soon let us know of her royal past, and so we called her Princess Penobscat Maine Coon Cat. She frequently came when you called her, most uncatlike, and would follow me upstairs in the evening as soon as I called out, "Bedtime".

She really liked to be with people. As we spent a lot of time on our computers, she spent a lot of time there also. She especially liked my computer (left) because it had a shelf above her, protecting her from overhead attacks.

If you look carefully on the right side of the righthand photo, you can see Penny hiding behind the computer as I worked on the photo of her on the left.

She always liked to rub against my beard, especially when I brushed her. Despite being very sick, she would always flap her tail if you called her name.

Here she is hiding in the closet under the shoe rack and behind my computer as I worked.

We noticed her belly was a bit fat during a vacation in SC in early November. There was a growth that the vets hoped was an infection. It was treated as such, to little avail, and we were told that it was an inoperable tumor. Her history of leukemia had caught up with her. She seemed to be fairly happy until New Year's Day and then declined rapidly. She died on 2 Jan 2007 while we were petting her in the closet. It quite possibly was her fifth birthday.

As we were driving to Simpson Bay Beach to bury our little friend, a rainbow appeared. She is on Simpson Bay beach with a tropical almond tree and a palm tree overhead and a stand of aloe vera behind.

That evening we took this sunset photo from the Caribbean side balcony at our condo. At about the same time, the full moon rose up on the other side of our condo.
